Drug companies have been warning about a new drug that may help men with erectile dysfunction. A new drug named sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, is being tested against a new, cheaper alternative, known as the erectile dysfunction drug. This new drug, which has already been approved by the FDA, is not currently approved by the agency as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The new drug will be available by prescription only for a few months, said Dr. Peter Zandberg, the chief executive of a drug manufacturer.
The new drug will be sold as a 100-milligram tablet, sold in 50-milligram (20-milligram) hard capsules and oral suspension, which will contain the medicine for up to 36 hours. The pill is also available in the form of a film-coated tablet, which can be swallowed and the capsule dissolved in water. Sildenafil is also available as a 100-milligram (25-milligram) hard capsule for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and also a 90-milligram (30-milligram) hard capsule for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The drug works by helping blood to move through the lungs and into the lungs, making it easier to breathe. But the drug will also cause side effects such as low blood pressure and headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue.
The new drug is not yet on the market. However, it may become available later this year, Zandberg said.
According to the World Health Organization, erectile dysfunction is a condition that can be caused by a lack of or a combination of physical and psychological causes, such as diabetes, anxiety, depression and stress. The drug is not known to cause diabetes, and there are no studies of its effectiveness.
Dr. Andrew W. Lehn, a urologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Albert Einstein's Bronx neighborhood, said the new drug is likely to help many men with erectile dysfunction.
"If it is not approved by the FDA, it could be an even better option," he said. "I'm not sure how much of a headache I would get from this, but that headache would definitely be a lot more manageable."
According to Lehn, men who suffer from erectile dysfunction also have erectile dysfunction problems that often accompany the physical problem. He said this drug may help men who have a physical or psychological condition like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and relationship problems.
Viagra is sold under the brand name Sildenafil by Pfizer and is a medication for erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition in which the arteries in the lungs become blocked.
In 2009, Pfizer bought the world's second-biggest manufacturer of sildenafil and began using the drug to treat pulmonary hypertension.
The drug was approved in 1998 and is still on the market, said Pfizer spokesman Dan Lechleiter.
In a separate study conducted by Pfizer, researchers found that a group of men treated with sildenafil, 100 milligrams (mg), had an improved ability to exercise. This improved was associated with improvements in a study of male sexual function.
However, the results were not statistically significant, said Lechleiter, who said this finding should not be taken as a cause for alarm.
